Jakarta, 3 April 2024 - PT Garudafood Putra Putri Jaya Tbk (Garudafood) collaborates with Biomagg in organizing education and training on organic waste management for employees. The program aims to support the government's target of reducing and handling organic waste through the bioconversion method of maggots or Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae.
Basuki Nur Rohman (Director of Garudafood) and Rulli Tobing (President Director of PT Sinarniaga Sejahtera (SNS)) attended the workshop on organic waste processing using maggots and derivative products organized through a partnership between Garudafood, SNS, and Biomagg at the Garudafood Head Office, South Jakarta (3/4/2024).
"The partnership is a creative and solution-oriented measure to optimize organic waste management, we hope this program can have a positive impact on the environment, economy, and society, as well as inspire the community to contribute to sustainable waste management," said Basuki Nur Rohman.
The maggot bioconversion method offers an innovative solution for processing organic waste into valuable products, such as organic fertilizer and animal feed. The education and training program is expected to increase employee awareness and ability to manage organic waste at home independently. Moreover, this program aligns with Garudafood's commitment to environmental conservation, achieving food security, and creating new employment.
On the same occasion, Garudafood employees also received derivative products from maggot cultivation, such as kasgot fertilizer, planter kits, organic vegetables (treated with kasgot fertilizer), aromatherapy candles (made from maggot oil), and dried maggots for ornamental fish feed. The derivative products were produced through a partnership with Biomagg.
"We have implemented several organic waste management programs by utilizing BSF maggots, including managing bad stock products from the Distribution Division of PT Sinarniaga Sejahtera (SNS) in Bogor which no longer have economic value," said Ruli Setiawan Tobing.
In addition, Garudafood also collaborated with Biomagg in a community empowerment program through BSF maggot cultivation in Jatijajar Village, Depok, West Java by providing training and technical assistance since January 2024 by involving 30 Jatijajar Head of Households (KK). In the past, Garudafood initiated the Maggot Entrepreneurial Village program in Pati, Central Java in 2021 through collaboration with local youth organizations.
From 2021 to March 2024, Garudafood processed and prevented the generation of organic waste at landfills (TPA) amounting to 20.20 tons of waste, produced more than 6 tons of high economic value BSF maggots, and educated 30 heads of households. Through these efforts, Garudafood successfully prevented the formation of carbon emissions equivalent to 67.14 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
The government is targeting a 2025 Clean-from-Waste Indonesia through 30 percent waste reduction and 70 percent proper waste handling of the total waste generation in 2025. The National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) reported that Indonesia will produce 19 million tons of waste in 2023, with food waste giving the largest contribution of waste composition, i.e. 41 percent. This partnership is a creative and solution-oriented step to optimize organic waste management using the maggot Bioconversion method with multiple benefits, such as achieving food security and creating new employment.
