Pati, 24 April 2024 – In order to commemorate Earth Day, PT Garudafood Putra Putri Jaya Tbk (Garudafood) Business Unit in Pati, Central Java, jointly with the Pati District Environmental Office, planted 1,000 mangrove seedlings on 20 hectares of land in Tunggulsari Village, Tayu Sub-District, Pati District, Central Java. This event was attended by Augustinus Winardi (Business Unit Head of Garudafood Pati), Agus Setiaji (Head of Environmental Management of the Pati District Environmental Office), the Muriya Urip Mangrove Activist Group, as well as other local figures and village officials.
Mangrove planting is part of Garudafood's commitment to environmental sustainability. It is an effort to restore the biodiversity ecosystem, optimize carbon absorption and storage, and implement climate change mitigation strategies.
"As a company committed to sustainability principles, we support environmental conservation efforts, including sustainable mangrove seedling planting," said Augustinus Winardi (Business Unit Head of Garudafood Pati).
"We believe this has a very positive impact on maintaining coastal ecosystem balance, reducing the impact of global warming, and protecting the habitat of biological species. Activities like this not only provide short-term benefits but also have a long-term positive impact on environmental sustainability and public welfare," he added.
Agus Setiaji (Head of Environmental Management of the Pati District Environmental Office) welcomed Garudafood's concrete action in conserving the coastal area of Pati to commemorate Earth Day.
"The mangrove planting intended for coastal conservation and disaster mitigation is an example of the collaboration and synergy between business actors (Garudafood) and the Government (Pati Environmental Ofice), which is beautiful and inspiring. Hopefully, we will have more elements of society, from the Corporate sector and communities, who care and want to make a real contribution to environmental conservation and overcoming the impact of climate change in Pati," said Agus Setiaji.
Mangrove trees are widely known for their ability to reduce abrasion and soil erosion in coastal areas. In addition to having efficient roots in protecting the impact of soil erosion, mangroves can minimize the impact of tidal flooding often experienced in coastal areas such as Pati, Central Java. In addition, the greatest strength of mangroves is their ability to capture and store carbon. The Center for International Forestry Research (Cifor) states that mangrove areas can store five times more carbon per hectare than highland tropical forests.
Since 2017, Garudafood has carried out rehabilitation in a number of coastal areas in Pati, Central Java, i.e. Kertomulyo Beach, Tunjung Rejo Beach, and Pohijo Beach by planting 8,200 mangrove seedlings. Garudafood's concrete action through planting mangrove seedlings serves as an effort to reduce the impact of climate change. It is a form of nature conservation that is in line with Garudafood's sustainability principles.
